Newcastle target ‘in talks with Bayern’ as German champions hunt Niklas Sule replacement
Newcastle transfer target Gleison Bremer is reportedly in talks with Bayern Munich as the German titans look to replace Niklas Sule in defense.
Newcastle was hoping to spend some of their newly-found riches on Bremer during the January transfer window. Magpies scouts reportedly identified the Brazilian as an ideal signing to improve Eddie Howe’s center-back options.
According to reports in Italy, Newcastle was willing to spend €30million (£25m) to sign Bremer from Torino.
But the Serie A club rejected any approaches for the 24-year-old as he is one of their most important players. Torino also began contract discussions to try and end the interest altogether.
ESPN, who cites the German outlet Sport1, claims Bremer could still secure a transfer in the summer. But it is unlikely to involve Newcastle.
That’s because the defender is supposedly in talks over a move to Bayern. The Bundesliga champions are hoping to strike a €15m (£12.5m) deal with Torino.
They have been monitoring his progress for some time and have decided now is the time to act.
Gleison Bremer could take next step
Bremer may well be tempted by the switch. It would give him the opportunity to feature in the Champions League for the first time. He played in Torino’s Europa League qualifying campaign in 2019-20 but they failed to reach the group stage after losing to Wolves in a play-off tie.
Bayern want Bremer to replace Germany’s international Sule as the influential center-half will leave for rivals Borussia Dortmund in the summer.
He will move to the Westfalenstadion on a free transfer once his contract expires on June 30.
Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc said: “We are pleased that we were able to sign a German national player in Niklas Sule and retain him for four years.”
Newcastle had also been in the frame to sign Sule, but they could not match Dortmund’s ambitions or pull power.
Newcastle tipped to complete transfer coup
Meanwhile, Brazil icon Rivaldo fancies Newcastle to make a move to sign Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale on a free transfer this summer.
Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed Bale’s contract will not be renewed.
Speaking on behalf of Betfair, via The Sun, Rivaldo said: “I think he [Bale] could even stay in Spain if a good offer arrives from a club with European ambitions.
“But the most likely scenario should be a return to England to a league he knows well. But that is also more demanding than any other.
“I definitely wouldn’t rule out a move to Newcastle. As I think there is a chance they might convince him to return to the highest level as one of the stars of the team next season, in what will presumably become a very interesting squad.
“At 32 years old he can still play for some time if he wishes to follow the steps of others like Cristiano Ronaldo, Thiago Silva or even myself.”
